Maximalism is a loud style composed of mixed patterns, excessive, but curated collections, and saturated colors. Its strongly opposed counterpart minimalism encourages paring everything down to its bare minimum, but maximalism encourages utilizing your space in the boldest way possible. Its ornate nature is reminiscent of the stately home interiors that can be found in England, but the bold colors, and modern accents are what updates maximalist style and makes it modern. How to Make Your Space Feel Larger

Just moved in and decorating your new space? Everyone likes to make their space appear bigger than it really is. Below are some tips to help enlarge your rooms without full on renovating and knocking walls down.

Use Mirrors

Adding large mirrors when decorating can add depth and make a room appear larger.

Lighten Up

White walls reflect light and make rooms appear bigger, but another trick is to paint ceilings and trim the same shade of white.

Big Accents

Decorate using a couple of larger accent pieces instea7d of a lot of little objects that can make the room feel cluttered.

Use “See Through” Furniture

Choose furniture that is “open” and you can see under or around. Instead of using chairs and sofas with skirts that touch the floor, choose furniture with legs that offer open space beneath them. Glass coffee tables or see through acrylic chairs are good options too.

Centered Layout

Instead of pushing all of the furniture against walls, try creating a centered space pulled away from walls. Having furniture right next to walls draws your eyes to the wall, making the room seem smaller.

Accentuate Vertical

A design trick to make your room appear larger is to draw the eye upward by accentuating the vertical. Add an extra tall bookcase, install vertical shiplap or install wallpaper with vertical stripes.

Monochromatic Color

Using a small color palette when painting and decorating can help make a room seem bigger.

Stick with Blinds

Skip curtains which can block light and outdoor views, which can make a room feel smaller.

Paint your Front Door: Over time the Montana weather can add wear and tear to the exterior of your home. One thing to do to boost curb appeal is applying a fresh coat of paint on your front door!  What color should you choose? Research shows that homes with black front doors can sell for up to $6,000 more than similar homes!

Upgrade Light Fixtures: Simple updates like new light fixtures and dimmer switches can make a huge difference! If you want to take it a step further, adding can lights is a great lighting option.

Upgrade Faucets and Shower Heads: Kitchens can be one of the most important rooms in a home! If you’re not looking to do a full kitchen renovation, but want to change the look of your kitchen – consider upgrading the sink and faucet. Upgrading the kitchen faucet to a pull down or touchless faucet will make a big difference. Winter Home Maintenance

Winter time is a great time for repairs and maintenance around the house!  We’ve gathered some maintenance projects ideas to keep your home working well – especially during the cold, winter months. 

Energy Saving: Seal up Cracks and Openings

You can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs by making sure all the openings around your home are sealed properly!  Sealing leaks around windows and doors, through the foundation, and in the attic can reduce escaping airflow by about 25%. Not only will you be saving more money, but most home buyers are interested in green home features and energy savers. You can hire a home energy auditor or check out these tips from the U.S. Department of Energy to evaluate your home yourself. An easy way to check your home besides feeling for drafts is to turn on all your lights, step outside after dark and look for any gaps around windows and doors.

Check Your Insulation

Living in Bozeman, MT means cold winters.  If you haven’t done so already, you’ll want to make sure your attic is insulated. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends you air seal areas of your home before adding insulation.   You can hire an insulation contractor to help determine what type and how much insulation will suit your home best. FYI, the higher the “R value” (thermal resistance) the more effective the insulation is.

Heating System Maintenance

During the fall is a good time to have your heating system serviced to make sure it’s ready for winter! Most HVAC and furnace filters need to be changed at least every three months but you can change them as often as once a month if you:

  •       have pets
  •       Someone in your household has allergies or a respiratory condition
  •       smoke inside
  •       live in a windy area
  •       occasionally use a fireplace
  •       have a large family (meaning more household dirt and dust)
  •       run your HVAC six months a year to year-round

Change Batteries in Your Smoke Detectors

You should get into the habit of changing your smoke detector batteries every fall/winter. The National Fire Protection Association recommend following the “change your clock, change your batteries” campaign. According to NFPA, 71% of smoke alarms that failed to operate had missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. If you have a smoke alarm that has a built-in 10-year lithium-powered battery, check the date on the back and replace the entire alarm if that time has elapsed.

Remove dying trees

If you have a tree on your property you’ve been eyeing for removal, you could save money by having it removed in the winter. Tree companies are super busy in the spring and summer from more emergency tree removals. When getting bids, you’ll want to make sure you hire a company who is licensed and insured.

Paint the garage floor

One fairly easy project to get out of the way in the winter is to clean and paint the garage floor. A spotless, painted floor is much easier on the eyes and will impress potential buyers. Lowe’s has a great step by step guide to clean, remove rust stains, fill cracks and seal your garage floor.

Switch to LED light bulbs

Residential LED light bulbs use at least 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting, according to the Department of Energy, boosting your home’s energy-efficient appeal. They can make your home look much cleaner and brighter. Like other artificial lighting, it can skew the colors of your home in real estate photos. You’ll want to photograph during the day and incorporate as much natural light as possible.

Replace door and cabinet hardware

Replacing door handles and cabinetry hardware is a relatively inexpensive and easy project you can do that will make a huge difference in how your space looks. Use Free Moving Boxes

Don’t spend money buying moving boxes – Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and Nextdoor.com are great places to find free boxes other people are giving away. You can also ask liquor stores, grocery stores, book stores and U-Haul Box Exchange to see if they have any shipping boxes that they’re just going to recycle anyway!

Declutter and Donate

Downsize, declutter and get rid of anything you don’t want to haul! Facebook Marketplace is again a great place to sell or give away any items you don’t want to move with you. You can also schedule a pick up or drop items off yourself to Goodwill, Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity. Save any donation receipts for tax season – you may be able to claim deductions.

Get Multiple Quotes

We suggest interviewing multiple moving companies and getting quotes from each one. Compare services while also comparing prices. You’ll also want to make sure they are properly licensed and insured. Here are some questions you’ll want to ask when interviewing moving companies.

Move in the Middle

Since most people move on the weekends, moving companies and trucks are more expensive then. Save some money by hiring the moving company in the middle of the week and even more in the middle of the month.

Be Prepared on Moving Day

Make sure you have plenty of water on hand – especially if you’re moving during the summer – for yourself and the movers. To make life a little easier on moving day, bring a door stopper with you to keep the front door open. If your movers to a great job, you may want to tip them. Hit up the ATM before moving day so you have cash on hand.

Take Before Photos

Take “before” photos of fragile or valuable items before packing them up. Just in case anything happens during the move, you’ll be able to off the movers your before photos if you need to file a claim to receive compensation for broken items.

Color-code your Boxes with Post-It Notes

An easy way to keep boxes organized for moving is to use post-it notes on boxes to color code them. For example, place pink post-it notes on boxes containing kitchen items.

Place a fully-charged iPad or other iOS device in a box to track your move

If you’re hiring a moving company to move your items long distance, you can place a fully charged iPad inside one of the boxes on the truck so you can track your belongings. Just use the “Find My iPhone” app to see where the truck is located.

Pack a moving day essentials box

Plan ahead and pack a box that contains anything and everything you might need on moving day. Toiletries, clothing, medications, trash bags, cleaning supplies, pet supplies and baby supplies. It’s a good idea to pack all of these together in one place so you don’t have to go searching through multiple boxes on moving day.

Double Check before Leaving

Do a double check inside kitchen cabinets, bedroom closets, drawers and appliances before you leave! It’s easy to forget items in these places, especially if there are multiple people packing and moving.

Rekey your New House

Best to be safe and have all the doors of your new home rekeyed. There’s no telling who has a copy of the key from the previous owner. Simply call a locksmith out and you can have new locks in a matter of hours.

Use foam pouches for plates, bowls and glassware – using plastic wrap or newspaper takes a lot of time. Try using foam pouches to hold plates and dinner ware. It’s easy to just slip them inside the pouch and stack them. You can find some here.

Place heavy items in small boxes – pack heavy items in smaller boxes to make carrying easier and to prevent things from falling out the bottom of the box.

Stuff boxes containing fragile items with pillows and blankets – use pillows and bedding as added protection to fragile items when packing. You have to pack them all anyway, might as well get extra use!

Refacing or painting your cabinets are two great options to update the look of your kitchen without breaking the bank.  If you’re looking to change up the aesthetic appeal of your kitchen, your cabinets are a good place to start.  Refacing involved replacing the doors, drawers and hardware and covering cabinets with a brand new veneer.  Especially if you’re dealing with older cabinets from the 70’s or 80’s, updating them with a more modern door will be aesthetically pleasing.  Painting cabinets is more affordable than refacing and can be done by a professional or DIY.

Another way to freshen up your kitchen is with a new backsplash.  Tile, beadboard, shiplap and high gloss paint or vinyl wallpapers are most of the options – each with varying cost and DIY ease.



For countertops, you can find granite at the lower end of the price range at a local stone yard. Formica is an affordable option and comes with pattern and texture choices.

• Clean the gutters: leaf and debris buildup can clog up gutters causing rain water and melting snow to over flow.  This overflow can cause damage to your siding, roof and foundation.  It’s best to keep these cleaned out before the snow hits!

• Store patio furniture: Winter weather can damage your summer patio and outdoor furniture. It’s a good idea to put unused furniture, trampolines, etc. into storage.

• Sweep: Get a chimney sweep and have your heating system cleaned and maintained.  Finding out there’s a problem with your heating system in the middle of winter can be a huge problem.

• Clean dryer vent: Winter can bring more static electricity which increases the risk of igniting lint buildup.  Clean out your dryer vent to help prevent a fire hazard.

Inspect Your Roof

Once the snow clears and it’s safe to get up there, hire a professional or climb up yourself to inspect for any damage. Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against water damage inside.  Fixing damaged spots quickly is important to prevent and water leaks and damage on the inside.

Clean Your Gutters.

Gutters direct rain and water away from your roof and home, protecting both in the process.  Make sure gutters are clear of debris and still in good condition after Winter to help prevent water from damaging your home or roof.

Clean or Replace HVAC Filters

This should be done more than once a year.   A dirty filter forces your heat, ventilation and air-conditioning system to work harder, which can cost you more money.

Clean Decks, Driveways, Fences and Other Outside Surfaces

A pressure washer is the perfect tool to get this job done.  If you don’t have one, borrow one from a neighbor or consider renting one. While you’re cleaning, inspect for any damage.

Fix Cracks in Your Walks, Driveway and the Outside of Your Home

After cleaning, inspect all the concrete and check for any cracks or needed repairs.  Fortunately, most of these repairs are fairly easy if taken care of early on.
